It will automatically renew, as long as you use it (i.e. make at least one Graph API call). As for checking the expiration date, you can do so from the admin portal, under the Billing section.

I called the dev api, but my remaining date never changes, so the subscription is automatically renewed only how many days before the expiration date.

The data is not periodically updated. Once you get near the expiration date (30 days or so), the tenant will be renewed for another year.

I have a renewable E5 subscription with ca 30 days left. I am not using VS Enterprise which I've read paid account is needed for E5 subscription creation. Would the subscription still be extended if i'm an active user, even without VS enterprise paid account?

Based on Vasil Michev's comment, It will automatically renew, as long as you use it (i.e. make at least one Graph API call). So you can try to do some development activities, which is the purpose of this program, by having some Graph API Call. You can go to this link to have a better understanding: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/graph/graph-explorer I guess you need to log into Graph Expolorer with your @xxx.onmicrosoft.com account
