Migration Manager - How to Stop Identity Mapping? (Dropbox to SPO/MS Teams)

I recently performed a migration from Dropbox to SPO/MS Teams. The goal in SPO/MS Teams was to create a brand new permission structure for the migrating files, as such we did NOT want the permissions from Dropbox to be migrated with the folders/files. The identity mapping was done automatically and I was unable to find a way to stop it prior to the migration. This resulted in having to manually remove unique permissions from the migrated files in SPO/MS Teams after the migration.

Is there currently an option in the Migration Manager to stop ALL identity mapping so none of the permissions are migrated with the files?
Is there a work around for this issue?

Is there a planned fix for this issue?

It looks like this is now a setting option when creating your migration within the Migration Manager: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointmigration/mm-settings

    Hi @Lisa Taranoff ,

Unfortunately, since DropBox is a third-party software, I cannot test it. According to your description, if it cannot be skipped and you cannot use third-party tools, then the only option is to manually remove unique permissions from the migrated files in SPO/MS Teams after the migration.

    Hi,

In my experience I recommend also to use third party tools to migrate from non-microsoft sources to Microsoft 365. Migration Manager is great because it's free, but there is a lot of room for improvement in the tools such as a better management of what's required to be migrated and what's need to be left behind

    Hi @Lisa Taranoff ,

You can try manually skipping the mapping step during the migration process or use third-party tools.

The steps for manually skipping the mapping step during the migration process in Migration Manager may vary depending on the version you are using, but generally, you can follow these steps:

    1. Open Migration Manager and create a new migration project.
    2. Select the Dropbox source and SharePoint destination.
    3. On the "Migration Settings" page, look for an option related to identity mapping. This may be labeled as "Map identities" or "User mapping".
    4. Deselect this option to skip the identity mapping step.
    5. Continue with the migration process as usual.

It's important to note that skipping the identity mapping step may result in some data being migrated without proper permissions, so it's recommended to carefully review the migration settings and test the migration thoroughly before proceeding.

    Hope it helps.
