After our initial migration to SharePoint Online I set up a lone, rather crude, 'retain everything for ever' retention policy. Now that the migration is done I want to make this a bit more sophisticated. However the option to create a new policy has disappeared from the 'Data lifecycle management', 'Retention Policies' tab.
I'm sure it and various other options were there until I disabled the policy, as that how I disabled it. It is now re-enabled by using PowerShell cmdLets. But the menu items are still missing. I have Global Admin rights across the whole site.
Any thoughts on how to get them back?
(ps I know, I know... I called it a 'backup'!)

Sam issue here! Do we really need an E5 license to do this?

We didn't need one before - surely they can't just change without warning??

It doesn't need an E5 license. I am using a global admin account with an E5 license assigned and also have this same problem.

I am having the same issue with a client. The Button for creating a retention policy is missing.
Ongoing issue for almost 4 weeks.
Microsoft is this acceptable?

Having the same issue here.
logged iwth different PC, different browsers, different Global AAdmin account but the same.
I cannot create Retention Policies.
Hi, okay, although my issue is not resolved I realised the reason why the opttion to create New Retention policies is not shoing for me is because we are using O365 Business Standard only and not E licensing as per below.
Microsoft documentation states that, in regard to Exchange data, a Microsoft 365 Business Standard license is not sufficient to apply Retention Policies and labels to a user.
We've not changed our licence recently and we used to have the add policy button but now it's gone!
Surely we don't need to upgrade our licence to get this button back?

I have the same issue in two tenancy's I manage.
Previously I've been able to add new policies without issue!
