Moving Files on premise from Logic Apps

It lists: SharePoint Online or in SharePoint Server on premises
and that we can
Create, copy, update, or delete files

However when using a logic app over an on premise gateway to on site Sharepoint server, when trying to copy a file we receive the error:

"This copy operation is not supported when using this with the On-Premises Data Gateway"

This seems to be the same for Move file as well. This seems somewhat fundamental to the use of Logic apps and the on-premise gateway. Is there something obvious I am missing or is the article incorrect in stating this is supported for both online and on-prem.

Hi @Doug Parkhouse ,

I'm using the SharePoint Server 2016 On-Premise, configured on-premise data gateway.

If using Copy file action, it will also meet the same error:

If I use Copy file (deprecated), then it's working to copy file in On-Premise environment:

Hi,

We are having some success with Copy File Deprecated however we cannot seem to:

Copy the file to another site
Copy the Metadata

Do you have any further recommendations on how best to do this with this Action

Hi @Doug Parkhouse ,

This action is used to copy file between library folders within same site and only copy file which isn't including metadata, as in the parameter only single site url provided.

A workaround is using SharePoint Event Receiver to copy file into other site using SharePoint Server Object Model:

Hi,

Frustratingly, using event receives in combination with logic apps would involve creating a great many hidden fields so we could store results from the event receiver codes to ensure they worked properly and reading them back into the logic application. This would turn a 150step workflow into a 400+ step workflow and rapidly expand on costs.

I think in this case writing our own handler locally as a service would be better as we can use HTTP post to submit to it to handle the work.

This is however a somewhat daft solution to a problem I don't think should exist. @Jerryzy-MSFT or @Mike Urnun , would you happen to know if the current Copy-file/Move-file etc are planned to be supported when communicating with an on-prem Sharepoint box?

Hi @Doug Parkhouse ,

Using Event Receiver would be a better solution instead of Logic Apps, as data gateway copy file action didn't support to copy file in On-Premise per the testing.

You can write farm solution with ItemAdded Event to handle copying file and setting metatdata between sites:

Hello @Doug Parkhouse

I believe this might be due to an incompatibility with Sharepoint 2019. Presently, the Sharepoint connector supports Sharepoint 2013 or 2016 on-prem servers, as per the reference doc: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/connectors/sharepointonline/

Hi Mike,

A bit frustrating but you might be right. Are you aware of any location I can leave feedback or development tracker where I can see when this feature will be enabled as using exclusively event handles is not fit for our purpose.

@Doug Parkhouse Yeah, I've inquired about it in the late-June timeframe and learned that some operations weren't supported yet. I'm not sure if there's a publicly available dev item that you can follow and track for updates but you can post your feedback by opening a new Azure UserVoice here: https://feedback.azure.com/forums/287593-logic-apps

I will also share this post with the Connector team and relay your feedback & experience through an internal channel.

Thanks for the relay Mike.

I have posted in the UserVoice as suggested. For now, we will have to use a rest API or custom CSOM connector for the moving/copying of files at the end of the logic apps workflow.

Previous suggestions to do the entire thing in event handlers will not work as the user needs to be able to adjust flows themselves when required. Only the last action of something like 200 steps is the actual copy/move part so we'll have to do this another way until support is added.
