Hi Suresh,
We have a storage account that is currently configured on the GRS and we want it to change to RA-GZRS. is it possible to change the existing type from GRS to RA-GZRS and is there any chances of data loss/slowness on the storage account when doing these change?
A: Yes, it is possible to switch from GRS to RA-GZRS. It is 2-step process. First is to convert to GZRS, then once that is complete, switch to RA-GZRS. Depending on which Azure region your primary account is located, you may be able to initiate the conversion yourself, otherwise you have to initiate the conversation via a support request.
There are limitations and potential blocking feature conflicts to be aware of. Article below details which regions don't support customer-initiated conversion as well as feature conflicts:
In terms of data loss, same storage SLA applies during conversion and your data remains available. Excerpt from documentation:
During a conversion, you can access data in your storage account with no loss of durability or availability. The Azure Storage SLA is maintained during the migration process and there is no data loss associated with a conversion. Service endpoints, access keys, shared access signatures, and other account options remain unchanged after the migration. If you choose to perform a manual migration, downtime is required but you have more control over the timing of the migration process.
In terms of slowness, I haven't noticed a slowdown during conversions, however, the amounts of data were less than what you have.
We have reserved nearly 100TB Hot| GRS storage capacity for the year so what is the way to exchange this reservation from GRS to RA-GZRS?
A: You should be able to exchange your GRS reservation for pro-rated credit and purchase new RA-GZRS reservation. Please see article below:
Self-service exchanges and refunds for Azure Reservations
If you have any questions/concerns in regards to your potential exchange you can create a new billing support request and a support engineer will assist you. There is no charge for billing/support requests.
