Today we have an old server with a "Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Std Core 2 SL AAA-03751" license, and we have decided to migrate this server to a partner's platform that offers cloud services (HostDime). It will be installed on a virtual machine in the VMware Cloud Director platform. Is it possible to transfer this license to the virtual machine when we deactivate the old server, or are there any legal implications with Microsoft?

Please note that this is a technical forum, and not a place where you can get authoritative answers on legal matters. To that end, you need to talk to your local Microsoft representative or call a Microsoft Licensing Specialist, 1-800-426-9400), Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST..

That said, I think it should be possible to move the license, but since the conditions are not exactly the same with physical machines as with virtual machines, you may want to check the licensing guide. Or talk with Microsoft.

    Hello @Uirá Cavalcante,

This is a community forum for technical questions & issues.

For question regarding pricing / licensing please contact a Microsoft sales partner or licensing expert.

Call (1-800-426-9400), Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST to speak directly to Microsoft licensing specialist.

Or you may open a ticket to Microsoft.

As suggested you should check with a Sales rep, but I believe you need at least 4 core license to host in a VM.

SQLServer 2019 licensing was updated to only license per virtual core (rather the host number of cores), but VM hosting requires a minimum of 4 core license, even if your Virtual Machine has less than 4 cores. So to migrate to a Virtual Machine, you will need to buy 2 more core packs.
