Can you use a phone number for verifying identity for Microsoft account?

I'm having trouble verifying my identity on my Microsoft account. I have an email and a phone number linked to the account, the email is a very old aim.com email that was involved in a data breach and is no longer accessible. It is only giving me the option to verify identity through my email. I can login to my account no problem but I would like to use my phone number to verify identity so I can add a new email and delete the old one but I'm not sure if this is possible. Any other possible solutions would be appreciated!
