Windows Update Not Installing After Restart

Hi all,

I have been trying to install the Windows configuration update (KB5030509) but the Windows update is not installing even after restarting the device. I have renamed the software distribution folder and restarted the following service, but I had no luck. I also ran sfc and DISM scans. I have the following commands

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

I'm facing the exact same problem. This update doesn't apply after restarting, and renaming stuff or deleting them doesn't make the windows update prompt go away.

Someone mentioned on Reddit to do a system restore to go on the previous update, I did that and my device started throwing random errors at me while using it, Now I am downloading the ISO from creation tool so that I can install the fresh windows and disable the updates except the security ones.

I installed windows 11 from the media creation tool, I checked for the update to install the driver and that update popped up, I was afraid that it would break the PC again. But it installed fine and had so issue what so ever

I have seen that other users whom are using AMD hardware are also having this issue. Correct me if I am wrong but if you use the media creation tool to create an update iso to upgrade your current windows it will only install Microsoft certified drivers. Microsoft certified drivers do not always support all functions and features of other hardware manufacturers. You may find some functions are disabled with Microsoft drivers. This may explain why the ISO upgrade may work. (You may also lose some functionality with Microsoft only drivers). Could the problem be that some of my latest manufacture drivers are incompatible with the KB5030510 update and that the KB5030509 update (that activates some of features in KB5030510) cannot use my up to date manufacturers drivers?

I am seeing more and more AMD hardware users are having this issue. Could it be that Microsoft is trying to take over functions that are controlled in bios by AMD? KB5030510 contains software to control RGB lighting that is controlled by Arora in bios. Fan expert is also loaded in bios. The AMD bios programs may not allow other programs to overwrite them to take over control of their functions. That would explain why the KB5030509 update cannot activate the functions that could not be overwritten and why the KB5030509 cannot finish being installed. Microsoft may have to write a newer version of KB5030510 and another version of KB5030509 to activate those functions on AMD hardware. WIntel strikes again!

I think I fixed the problem. I put a weak pause on updates. I then googled AMD chipset drivers. Easiest way to find them, put in the socket type. Mine is AM4 then the chipset, mine is still the old B350. I download them and did a restart, make sure you have the update set to pause for 1 week. Then restart, mine started and restarted again, but I could see clearly that it was installing the drives with a % like 35% percent installed. Once the machine was done, I went to the check for updates, and it worked when it rebooted and said everything is up-to-date!!

I may have found the solution. Go to Update History, scroll down to Uninstall Updates (down at the very bottom). Remove every entry there. Mine were mostly Microsoft Visual C++ patches. Not to worry, Windows will prompt you later to reinstall any necessary updates. Then reboot, let Windows Update run. Worked for me! I sincerely hope it works for you too!

Every time I try to update, it fails and I have to either wait until the computer removes them or reset it.

I've had the same issue for months. Intel processor and NVidia card. When I restart or reboot the update keeps telling me that it still needs to restart.

I have reinstalled windows and the update automatically applied. The above link in this comment could also be used to fix the issue.

Many people are having the same issue but the Microsoft Windows Issue Page won't list it.

Have exactly the same issue. Try delete KB5030310, and install it again. It was done , but after some time I get the same message to restart PC for KB5030509

Microsoft apparently doesn't give a crap about this problem or a solution. Maybe they are in the middle of a layoff or something in their updates department.

Yep, the update has been quietly replaced with other updates. Co-pilot now works with multiple monitor computer setups.

The only non-disruptive solution at the moment is a inplace Windows update via Media Creation Tool.
