Does the feature work correctly when used in Word on your desktop? Or does the problem occur only when used in Canvas? Canvas is not a Microsoft product. Here is the Canvas Support page, where you may be able to get an answer to your question:
"Update Table" does not always reproduce table of contents styles and programming in a template document
Hello, I built a document template (canvenas) that students use. The table of contents is already programmed as well as the styles for the headings. Most of the time, when students use the canvas and update the table of contents, everything works perfectly. But, for some, the (scheduled) withdrawals do not take place. Do you have any idea why the function is done randomly?

2023-10-28T14:23:26.2433333+00:00 Could you give us an example of when the table of contents does not work as expected? Since any table of contents usually relies on styles, maybe users are reformatting the text? A sample document would help.
