Why is cutting and pasting a folder in OneDrive desktop ***painfully*** slow?

Steven Doig 0 Reputation points

On a Windows 11 64-bit laptop with 32GB RAM / 13th-gen Core i5 CPU.

Cutting a folder and pasting it into a new destination, Windows File Explorer hangs for 10-20 minutes and more ("not responding").

When Windows File Explorer finally responds, the move dialogue opens and sits at 0% for about 3 minutes.

Is there any way to improve this slow speed?

Once the move starts, the transfer says it is going to take 12 hours to move a folder of 725 MB, speed of 1.23KB/s.

The laptop has an SSD.

Help appreciated.

    Hi @Steven Doig

For better analysis, I have following questions:

    • Does this issue occur with moving files from other local folders instead OneDrive folder to desktop or to other destination?
    • Will it be faster if you cut a small file from OneDrive?
    • Is there any other sync software running on your machine?

For now, I suggest you update OneDrive client to the latest.

Please make sure the files that you want to move are always kept on this device (not Files On-Demand option).

Besides, you may search "CMD" and run Command Prompt as Administrator, enter the commands below to have a check.

    Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

    Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    And then run sfc /scannow.

Any updates, welcome to post back.
