Shared printer without PC name

Question

A user has his own PC (Win10 Pro) named PC-X.

On this he has shared the printer connected to a USB port and the share name is identical to the printer name ("Printer-XYZ").

On another PC he created a printer connected to this share and the name of this printer is "Printer-XYZ on PC-X".

Now the user complains about this name because he says it should be identical to the original printer; in other words he wants the shared printer to be called just "Printer-XYZ".

The reason is that the two PCs use the same shared application on the server which identifies the printer as "Printer-XYZ", so on the second PC the "Printer-XYZ on PC-X" printer is not found.

However, I don't see how it is possible to rename a printer resulting from sharing.

You can try the following steps:

1. On the PC Sharing the Printer ("PC-X"):

• Go to "Control Panel"> "Devices and Printers".
• Right-click on the shared printer ("Printer-XYZ") and select "Printer properties".
• In the Properties window, go to the "General" tab.
• Change the "Share name" to "Printer-XYZ" (or any desired name without spaces or special characters).
• Click "OK" to save the changes.

2. On the PC Connecting to the Shared Printer:

• After renaming the shared printer on "PC-X", the other PC should automatically reflect the new name ("Printer-XYZ") for the shared printer.

By renaming the share name of the printer on the PC that is sharing it, you should be able to ensure that the connected PCs see the printer with the desired name ("Printer-XYZ"). This should resolve the issue of the shared application not finding the printer with the correct name.
