On a Intune managed device multiple user accounts are created when the same Azure ID logs in, resulting in C:\users\UPN, C:\users\UPN.AzureAD and C:\users\UPN.AzureAD.000

We have been experiencing this problem for a while now, but it seems that more and more environments are facing this issue.

On an Intune managed device our AzureAD users logon.
Sometimes Windows does not seem to recognize the allready existing useraccount on the pc and continues to create a new profile.

This results in the user losing all of their files, since they work in another folder, like shown below.

I have 2 questions:

  • What is happening and why?
  • How do I fix and prevent this?

Thanks in advance!

    @Micha Gerkema,Thanks for posting in Q&A.

    From your description, I know that windows do not recognize the already existing user account on the device and continues to create a new profile on Intune managed device.

    To clarify this issue, here are something you can check.

    1. Unenroll the device in Intune and left the device in Azure AD, then check whether it continues to create a new profile while Azure AD user's logon.
    2. Check if there exist the same issue on other Intune managed devices.
    3. Restart the device and check whether the issue will disappear.

    Thanks for your kind understanding.
