WSUS Console Keeps Crashing

The MMC console for WSUS has always crashed for me, but recently it is almost unusable because of the constant crashes. I'm running Windows Server 2022.

Please don't tell me to delete the MMC cache as I am fully aware of that workaround and have done it many, many times without improvement!!!

    Hello

I understand that you’re experiencing frequent crashes with the WSUS MMC console on Windows Server 2022, and that deleting the MMC cache hasn’t resolved the issue. Here are a few other potential solutions you could try:

Run the Server Cleanup Wizard in Parts: If the crashes occur when you run the Server Cleanup Wizard, try running it in parts:

First, run it with everything EXCEPT “Unused updates and update revisions” and “Unneeded update files” checked.

Then, run it again, this time with ONLY “Unused updates and update revisions” checked.

Finally, run it a third time, this time with ONLY “Unneeded update files” checked.

This method has been reported to work almost 100% of the time.

Use a WSUS Cleanup Script: There are scripts available that can help clean up WSUS and perform maintenance on the SQL database. These scripts can help trim excess data from WSUS and might resolve the issue.

Are you performing the proper WSUS maintenance in addition to running the Server Cleanup Wizard (SCW) including but not limited to running the SQL Indexing script, setting up the recommended optimizations in IIS, removing obsolete updates, removing declined updates, removing sync logs, backing up the SQL database (WID = SQL), shrinking the size of the SQL database, etc.?
