How to force internet egress instead of inter-region for Azure VM

I'm using the first 12-month free VM with a pay-as-you-go subscription, and noticed that I'm getting charged for "Bandwidth Inter-Region" when I'm not even close to exceeding the 15GB free internet egress quota. After some research I found that the routing preference of the public IP associated with the VM is set to "Microsoft network", and there's no way of changing that for a Basic public IP, only available for Standard public IP. But I can't upgrade to Standard because the 12-month free only includes dynamic public IP, which is only available for the basic SKU.

Is there a way of forcing the the VM to use the free 15GB internet egress instead of inter-region traffic?

    @tdx

    Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & I hope you are doing well.

    Your observation is correct.

    • Internet routing preference is only compatible with zone-redundant standard SKU of public IP address.
    • Basic SKU of public IP address isn't supported

    There is no way to configure the Basic IP to use Internet Routing preference.

    However, please note that both Microsoft Routing and Public Internet (ISP network) Routing come under Internet Egress only

    • See : Azure Bandwidth Pricing
    • Inter Region refers to data transfer between regions within Azure like Global Vnet peering or Vnet to Vnet traffic

    This means,

    • Changing the Internet egress traffic routing will have no impact on the Inter-region traffic charges
    • If you have a Global Vnet peering or Vnet to Vnet traffic, it will always be charged under the Inter-region bandwidth pricing.

    Thanks,

    Kapil.
