A referral was returned from the server.

The Dutch Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, TNO, sells a Windows program with which radar system performance can be assessed, see www.tno.nl/carpet. Since the latest upgrade of the Windows operating system, a somewhat mysterious pop-up window appears when one attempts to install the program: A referral was returned from the server. Subsequently the installer quits. The app is written in C++, using the Qt framework. I know what the remedy is to bypass this message. However, I don't want this message to appear. What can be done so that the message does not appear?

Hi,
You could try this method:
Before you continue to apply the solutions bellow, first make sure that UAC is already disabled on your system. To do that:

  1. Go Control Panel > User Accounts and click at Change User Account Control Settings option.

  2. At the User Account Control Settings window, drag the slider at the lower position to completely disable UAC.

  3. Restart your computer and then try to run the program with the error.

If the problem persist then continue to the solutions mentioned below.

  1. Right-click at this application that gives the error and select Properties.

  2. At Compatibility tab, click Change settings for all users.

  3. Check the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox and then click OK twice to close program's properties.

  4. Run you program now. The "A referral was returned from the server" error should be gone.

Best regards.

Thank you very much Dale for this recipe. However, it is not quite what I am looking for. I don't want the referral-message-box to appear at all. I assume that if you install Google Earth or Microsoft Excel (to name just two examples), the referral message box does not appear. Whom should we contact at Microsoft in order to achieve that our install program appears on a white list. Or should we modify our C++/Qt app? In what way?

Hi,

Hello,
I don't think it is a C++/Qt problem. I think it is a Windows settings problem: in Local Group Policy Editor check "Computer Configurations -> Windows Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> User Account Control -> Only elevate executables that are signed and validated": set to "Disabled". Then restart your computer. Normally the error is gone then.

Thank you for this response Guido! However, my question is: what must be done so that our product gets the status of being an elevate executable, that is signed and validated? E.g., should we contact a Microsoft spokesman? As said: we don't want the alertbox to appear at all. Cordially, Arne
