Is it okay to delete Test sync group now that all the data has been copied over to the storage account?

Just completed a migration from our on-prem file storage to an Azure Storage Account. This was the first one completed so we were looking around at the best option to do this, while testing, we setup a Sync Group linked to a test directory on the on-prem file server, this linked to the Cloud Storage Account setup. We migrated all the users data using robocopy, forgot the test sync group still existed and now when checked the test directory on-prem, all the data is there. Sync Group status shows successful uploads / download to server. Cloud Tiering is not enabled. I want to remove this Sync Group / Server Endpoint without causing issues to the cloud only Storage Account. All the data is stored elsewhere on-prem and was robocopied to the new Azure files storage account. Is it safe to delete the sync group that has mirrored the cloud files to on-prem without disrupting anything? Apologies if not all the details are here, happy to provide more details on request.

@Anonymous Firstly, Apologies for the delay response!
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum, Thank you for posting your query here!

Removing a server endpoint means stopping sync to and from that server location with the cloud endpoint (Azure file share) in the same sync group. Before you deprovision your server endpoint, there are a few steps you should take to maintain data integrity and availability. This article covers several methods of deprovisioning and the appropriate guidance, ordered by scenario. Follow the steps for the use case that best applies to you. If it is ok to permanently lose the data that you are currently syncing, you can skip to directly deprovisioning your server endpoint.

For more info refer to this article

If you have already migrated all the data from your on-premises file storage to the Azure Storage Account using robocopy, and you are not using Cloud Tiering, then it should be safe to delete the Sync Group and Server Endpoint without disrupting anything. Deleting the Sync Group and Server Endpoint will only remove the link between your on-premises file server and the Azure Storage Account. It will not affect the data that has already been migrated to the Azure Storage Account. However, before deleting the Sync Group and Server Endpoint, it is recommended that you verify that all the data has been successfully migrated to the Azure Storage Account and that there are no issues with accessing or modifying the data in the Azure Storage Account. Once you have verified that the data has been successfully migrated and there are no issues, you can safely delete the Sync Group and Server Endpoint.

    Hello (SYS) Tyler Hall,

Thank you for posting your query here!

Apologies for the delay in response. Please note that it is generally safe to delete a Sync Group once all the data has been successfully migrated to the Azure Storage Account, especially if the data is stored elsewhere on-premises. Deleting the Sync Group won't impact the data stored in the Azure Storage Account.

However, before deleting, it's advisable to double-check the following: · Confirm that all data has been successfully migrated and is accessible in the Azure Storage Account.

    · Ensure there are no dependencies on the Sync Group that might affect other processes or applications.

Once you've verified these aspects, you can proceed with deleting the Sync Group without disrupting the data in the Azure Storage Account.

Please let us know if you have any further queries. I’m happy to assist you further.
