Is it possible to create a back up of Teams Chat Messages prior to implementing a Teams Retention Policy?

Hello! I am away to put in place a new Teams Retention Policy to delete chat messages over a year old.
What I'm unclear of, is can I take a back up or roll back the policy if, for whatever reason, it doesn't go as planned? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! I cannot find anything online to suggest I can do this but want to be certain! Thanks!

After you create and save a policy, you can't change some settings, including the name of the retention policy, the scope type (adaptive or static), and the retention settings except for the retention period.

If your retention policies aren't working as expected or you see errors related to your retention policies, use the following troubleshooting resources:

• Identify errors in Microsoft 365 retention and retention label policies.
• Resolve errors in Microsoft 365 retention and retention label policies.
