Is it possible to create a back up of Teams Chat Messages prior to implementing a Teams Retention Policy?

Hello! I am away to put in place a new Teams Retention Policy to delete chat messages over a year old.
What I'm unclear of, is can I take a back up or roll back the policy if, for whatever reason, it doesn't go as planned? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! I cannot find anything online to suggest I can do this but want to be certain! Thanks!

    After you create and save a policy, you can't change some settings, including the name of the retention policy, the scope type (adaptive or static), and the retention settings except for the retention period.
