Trailing slash required to login to sharepoint

I am running sharepoint 2019 on premise, on Windows 2016 server. The machine name in is  xyz.mydomain.com.   There is a DNS alias sharepoint.mydomain.com -> xyz.mydomain.com. Recently people have been having problems logging in.    This appears to have started when I changed the IP address of the sharepoint server. But I have since change it back. If I try to login to https://sharepoint.mydomain.com   I keep getting prompted for authentication.       Nothing in the event logs shows that authentication succeeded or failed.     If I login to https://sharepoint.mydomain.com/     (i.e. with a trailing slash) I can login.  Although I may get a blank page and have to reconnect to https://sharepoint.mydomain.com/    to see the default page. In IIS, the sharepoint site is configured to use the hostname sharepoint.mydomain.com and the SSL certificate is a valid commerical one. In IIS, there is also an admin site defined for https://xyz.mydomain.com:1234 5 .  I have no problems logging in to that one. I don't know why the behavior is different with out the trailing / character.    Appreciate any insight.
