Purview DG Custom Classification / Classification Rules fail to be applied to table after scans. A test of classification rule with upload csv smaller than 80KB generated error message "A system error occurred. Unable to verify classification rule." However, a test of classification rule with upload csv smaller than 2KB applied the classification.

@Bedell, Winston - Thanks for the question and using MS Q&A paltfrom.

It seems like you are facing an issue with applying custom classification and classification rules to tables after scans in Microsoft Purview.

Firstly, it is important to note that Microsoft Purview custom classifications are applied only to structured data sources like SQL and CosmosDB, and to structured file types like CSV, JSON, and Parquet. Custom classification isn't applied to unstructured data file types like DOC, PDF, and XLSX.

Regarding the error message you received, "A system error occurred. Unable to verify classification rule," it could be due to various reasons such as incorrect permissions, issues with the scan rule set, or issues with the data source itself. To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:

    • Check if you have the correct permissions to apply custom classifications and classification rules. You need to have data curator or data source administrator permissions on any collection to be able to create a custom classification.
    • Check if the scan rule set is configured correctly. The scan rule set determines which classifications will be compared and applied to your data. For more information, see how Microsoft Purview classifies assets in the provided document.
    • Check if there are any issues with the data source itself. You can try rescanning the data source and see if the issue persists.

Regarding the test of classification rule with upload csv smaller than 2KB applied the classification, it could be due to the fact that the smaller file size made it easier for the system to verify the classification rule.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
