    Hello WANG Yuzhi,

    Thanks for your question.

Using data disks to store applications and data offers the following benefits over using the OS disk:

    • Improved Backup and Disaster Recovery
    • More flexibility and scalability
    • Performance isolation
    • Easier maintenance
    • Improved security and access control

The above is documented here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/managed-disks-overview

    Also See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/faq-for-disks?tabs=azure-portal#why-should-i-use-the-data-disk-to-store-applications-and-data-instead-of-the-os-disk-

It is always recommended to have an OS disk and Data Disk separate. OS disk will also contain SWAP files and it might cause a performance issue.

On the other hand, when u have Data Disk separate the performance of read and write will be based on the disk type IOPS & IOPS of the VM

    • More flexibility and scalability
    • Performance isolation
    • Easier maintenance
    • Improved security and access control
