Upgrade server 2019 essentials to 2019 standard

Question

Is it possible to update windows server 2019 essentials to server 2019 standard? If so, do you have to buy a standard license or is there some type of upgrade license?

You can convert Windows Server 2019 Essentials (retail) to Windows Server 2019 Standard (retail), you will need to purchase a Windows Server 2019 Standard license.

Hi, I need upgrade Windows Server 2019 Essential to Standard and I find your recipe. When I was try, a problem has occurred with command dism.

dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:---- /AcceptEula

Error: 87

The set-edition option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

I had the same issue with

dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:---- /AcceptEula

resulting in

Error: 1168 The specified product key could not be validated.

Turned out that I first needed to use a retail key to convert it from Essentials to Standard. Afterwards I could switch to a volume licensing key for core-based licensing.
