Mapped drives very slow vs UNC on 2016 fileserver.

This started about a month ago. Not sure where the issue is but looking for someone one to point me in the right direction.

This is affecting numerous but not all users. We all have the same windows build/hardware etc.

User is on the vpn (globalprotect). We have a drive letter mapped M: to \fs01\clients
User uses explorer (or word Open .. browse etc) and each folder takes about 1-3 seconds to load.
So: M: 3sec... CurrentClients 3secs .. 2020 3secs.. Uploaded 2secs.. PDFs 5secs... etc.

User then goes to \fs01 using unc path.. each folder opens instantaniously.
My understanding was if anything UNC should be slower because you reauthenticate each folder..

What doesnt help is I have seen "slight" lag from time to time but nothing on the scale of our users (I have about 10 tickets so far in a firm of 500)

Browsing other file shares in the same subnet dont have any issues.

I am stumped. thoughts?

    Hi ,

Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following questions:

User is on the vpn (globalprotect). We have a drive letter mapped M: to \fs01\clients

1.If you mapped drive with IP address, will the issue still happens?

2.Are there a ton of files or folders in the mapped drive?

3.How did you map network drive? Via GPO or manually? If you map the drive via GPO, please manually map the drive to narrow down the issue.

4.Make sure you have patched fully windows updates for those problematic clients.

Also ,check if the following link is helpful with you:
