Deleted a pre-existing contact on the cloud to replace with an ADuser. I'm getting proxyaddress conflicts

I'm in the processes of replacing contacts we had in the cloud, with actual users that will sync over via the AD connect provisioning tool.
I've deleted the contact object, however my syncs fail saying that my Azure AD has an existing proxyaddress value that matches the old contacts email address.
I've done many attempts to find any trace of this object. But i cannot find any traces of the contact in get-msoluser, get-msolcontact, get-azureaduser, get-azureadcontact.
Is there somewhere else i should be looking?
