In Outlook, if you have an online archive emails going into folders there that have not been read cannot be seen at a glance even though the "Data File Properties" for the archive has this option to "Show number of unread items".
This is incredibly frustrating - if the option to see unread items (as you would if the folders were in the main inbox area) is present then it should do what it says. If online archives are not supposed to show you the number of unread items then the option should not be present. In my mind it should do what the main inbox does:

This did not solve my problem ... as you can see below, the option was ticked and ticking either has no effect on the display (ie no numbers appear agains the folder):
Still no answer to this - basically, I use latest Outlook installed as client under Windows and to me, if folders in the online archive cannot display either unread or total number of items (which also doesn't work) then why have the option there to alter at all ?
Is there any other way to highlight this question as there seems to be a lot of radio silence about this.
One other thing ... Christy your example is only about anything in the onlince archive->inbox ... my folders are on the same level as the inbox.

Having the same issue, wondering if this was ever resolved through solution or possibly it resolved itself? I have 13 different folders in my archive email box and 3 of them are showing number of items, the other ten are blank, but set to show total number of items.
Hi Justin - in the end I gave up and moved all my folders into the main inbox and adjusted my rules accordingly. I think that this is a bug - that folders in archive should accurately reflect the number of items in them visually as is in the main inbox. But there seems to be no appetite for MS to sort that - the show number of items options which are effectively useless in the archive should at least be greyed out if this is never going to be an option IMO.
Thanks Paul for the response, I wish I had that option but I'm way over my mailbox quota so don't have that option. Just strange that it works on some folders but not all, seems to be a glitch/bug. Oh well... thanks again.

How did you set the option to "Show number of unread items" for folders listed under Online Archive?
Based on my research, when I try the below steps, the number of unread items will be displayed on the right of the folder name:

This didnt help ... so below I go into this folder in my online archive which has as you can see by the blue marks unread items but it doesn't show the count:
in fact it was already tiked to sho unread - and its either that or total number of items. Either option does nothing in the online archive.
The web version though does seem to work - but I rely on outlook app not the web one for various reasons.
This did not solve my problem - the option is ticked already for the sub folder as you can see below:
Selecting either options of unread or total has no effect.
Interestingly, the online web version seems to work - but I can't use that for various reasons and surely they should work the same ...
This is all Office 365 so very puzzled.
Update - this forum page seemed to keep asking for reload so I re-posted. The online version doesn't show the blue markers but right mouse clicking on the folder shows the number unread on the combo box.
Also on the online web version, if you click on the folder then it updates and shows the unread number ...
