Is there a maximum size to VM images I can create and store in Azure? In theory, could I have a 2 TB machine image and use it for a scale set? (Of course, I know there would be many caveats to working with such a huge image.)

    Hi Noah S,

Thank you for your patience while we are reviewing your query.

Azure Virtual Machine (VM) sizes are designed to provide a wide range of options for hosting your servers and their workloads in the cloud. Sizes are categorized into different families and types, each optimized for specific purposes. Users can choose the most suitable VM size based on their requirements, such as CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth.

The below article provides information abouthttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/sizes/overview?tabs=breakdownseries%2Cgeneralsizelist%2Ccomputesizelist%2Cmemorysizelist%2Cstoragesizelist%2Cgpusizelist%2Cfpgasizelist%2Chpcsizelist

You can create an image with any VM size. Custom images are like marketplace images, but you create them yourself. Images can be created from a VM, VHD, snapshot, managed image, or another image version. Later when you create a VM from the image you can choose a VM SKU/size of your choice, irrespective of the actual image's size.

If you have a large number of images that you need to maintain, and would like to make them available throughout your company, you can use an Azure Compute Gallery as a repository.

When creating a scale set, you need to ensure that the virtual machine size you choose can handle the storage and performance requirements of your 2 TB image.
