Issues Adding Outlook.com Calendar to Outlook Mobile on iPhone

Using Outlook as an email client for a non-Microsoft email account (optonline.net) and having created an outlook.com account for calendar synchronization. The outlook.com account is accessible via web browsers, but unable to add it to the Outlook mobile client on the iPhone. An error message states that the outlook.com account is not recognized. Email functionality works, but unclear why the calendar cannot be added. What are the alternatives for having a calendar on both mobile and desktop devices?
