Our customer is running the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The Windows 11 GAC enterprise 23H2 version is planning for use. Sound the LTSC version of Windows 11 is released, we would compare the difference between Windows 11 GAC enterprise, Windows 11 LTSC enterprise & Windows 11 IoT LTSC enterprise those 3 versions such as comparing the EOS year, features, cost, upgrade method & etc.

We found that Windows 11 LTSC enterprise version is designed for specialty devices or special purpose, however the main purpose of our customer's desktops or notebooks is office use. The main application is using MS office including E-mail. Also, some team of uses will using with special application such as Autocad.

What version of Windows 11 is recommended for office use?

Any pro & con for using mix version?

    Hello,

For office use, particularly for a general office environment using applications like Microsoft Office and email, Windows 11 Enterprise (standard GAC enterprise) is typically the recommended version.

Here is a comparison of the key aspects of Windows 11 GAC Enterprise, Windows 11 LTSC Enterprise, and Windows 11 IoT LTSC Enterprise that you mentioned:

    Windows 11 GAC Enterprise

    • EOS (End of Service) Year: Generally, follows Microsoft's mainstream and extended support lifecycle (typically 5+5 years).
    • Features: Full feature set with regular updates, best for environments that benefit from the latest features and improvements.
    • Cost: Standard enterprise pricing, often part of volume licensing agreements.
    • Upgrade Method: Regular updates through Windows Update for Business or WSUS.
    • Recommended For: General office use, frequent updates for security and features.

    Windows 11 LTSC Enterprise

    • EOS Year: Extended support, typically lasting 10 years.
    • Features: Focuses on long-term stability, with fewer feature updates, primarily security and critical fixes.
    • Cost: Usually similar to standard Enterprise, but with emphasis on long-term stability which might be preferable for some industries.
    • Upgrade Method: Upgrades less frequently, major LTSC releases approximately every 2-3 years.
    • Recommended For: Specialty devices, environments where stability is critical over new features.

    Windows 11 IoT LTSC Enterprise

    • EOS Year: Also extended support, matching LTSC enterprise versions.
    • Features: Tailored for embedded systems and IoT devices, minimal feature updates.
    • Cost: Typically aligned with IoT/embedded system licensing.
    • Upgrade Method: Similar to LTSC, less frequent upgrades.
    • Recommended For: Specific IoT devices and embedded systems, not general office use.

Pros and Cons of Mixed Versions

    Pros:

    • Flexibility: You can tailor the operating system to different needs. For example, using LTSC for critical systems where stability is paramount and GAC enterprise for general office use.
    • Cost Efficiency: Potentially reduces costs in environments where constant updating isn't necessary.

    Cons:

    • Compatibility Issues: Potential challenges ensuring that all systems work together seamlessly.
    • Management Complexity: More complex IT management with varying update schedules and feature sets.
    • Support Challenges: Different support lifecycles might complicate long-term planning.

Given that your customer’s primary applications are Microsoft Office and potentially AutoCAD, the Windows 11 GAC Enterprise version is the most suitable choice. It provides:

Full feature support for office applications.

Regular updates to ensure security and compatibility with the latest software.

A familiar user experience that aligns with typical office environments.

I hope the information above is helpful.

    Best Regards,

    Yanhong Liu
