I am using the microsoft authenticator app to try and log into my own admin account for a domain that I own in order to host a power bi visual.

I am asked for a 6 digit auth code but the app provides 8 digits. I wondered if it was due to my old device having the auth app on it and I didn't switch it over but nothing seems to be on the old phone and I tried installing it again but no dice so I don't believe that is the case. Each time I try to set up a work account (I believe my current one is set up as personal) - it asks me to input the auth app code in...while I am in the auth app. So I am not sure where to go from here. The other option is to scan a QR code but I don't know how I would get one of those.

Regarding the admin MFA issue only phone support can help and ask them to escalate your issue to the data protection team. While phone call, press "1" as a business email user and press "1" again as technical support. You also need to provide your subscription purchased information such as company name, billing information, phone number etc. See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/get-help-support?view=o365-worldwide#phone-support
