My inbox emails have all disappeared

My emails all disappeared from my inbox. I asked to retrieve more from the server and they all flew past the screen and then disappeared. I can search for an email but can't get them into my inbox. So, they are in there but not retrievable as a list in my inbox. My sent box is not affected.

How do I get my emails back?

    Hi, @Lesley Moore

Based on your description, I understand that the email is still on the server, but it is not showing up in the inbox correctly.

You can troubleshoot by following these steps:

    1. Does the issue exist in the Outlook client and OWA?
    2. Check your email filters and sorting options to see if they have custom filtering options set up like "Unread", "Starred", etc. For more information, see Items disappear or are not visible in an Outlook folder - Outlook | Microsoft Learn
    3. Try to rebuild the email index. Fix search issues by rebuilding your Instant Search catalog - Microsoft Support
    4. Open Outlook in Safe Mode to exclude the interference of add-ins.
    5. Create a new Outlook profile to see if the problem exists. Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support

    Are you using classic Outlook?

If so, change how much mail to keep offline in classic Outlook

Click File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

Account Settings in the Backstage view

Select an Exchange or Microsoft 365 account, and then click Change.

Change command in the Account Settings dialog box

Under Offline Settings, move the slider to the desired amount of time, such as All12 months6 months3 months, or 1 month. Note: If you're using Outlook 2016, you can also select an amount of time as short as 3 days.
