Recent Change in Azure Files Billing Model in Azure Estimator: Impact and Guidance Needed

It appears there is a change on the Azure Files Billing model in the Azure Estimator. It looks like it defaults to Provisioned v2 and adjusts the sizing to 256GB on existing safe estimates regardless of the previous model and size configured. This could be an issue for customers and partners who have shared estimates as the costs will adjust according to the above changes. Looks like this change happened in the last 24 hours. Can anyone confirm this change in billing model, and how might it affect users who have existing estimates?

    Hi @Anonymous
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform! Thank you for asking your question here.    The default storage model on the calculator has now been changed to Provisioned v2, which is a higher performance option. Unfortunately, this can cost you more than a model you used in the past (such as Standard or Premium). The default storage size is now also set to 256GB, in case you were considering a different size earlier.

If you save any money or share any expense accounts, these changes could cause it to show a higher value than expected. Don’t worry — this doesn’t mean your actual expenses will automatically go up, but estimates may need to be reviewed soon.

To fix this, head over to the Azure pricing calculator and check your saved calculator. If the model is set to Provisioned v2 or sized to 256GB, you can adjust them to what you really need (e.g., Standard or Premium models, or different storage size) if you calculate these figures with others If you have shared, check make sure they know about the changes, so they aren’t caught off guard by updated pricing. Once you’ve updated the calculations, you need to track your actual expenses on the Azure portal to make sure everything matches up.
