cannot install authenticator because it asks me to confirm with the authenticator

Question

I can log on to my account through login.microsoftonline.com but when trying to go to security info to change the MFA verification methods I get a number to be used in the authenticator app. But when trying to install the authenticator app on my phone I am asked again to use a number in the app but as I cannot install the app there is nowhere to insert the number. Complete loop that is. IT added another verification method through e-mail but when clicking "I cannot use the authenticator at the moment" that email option does not show. I have unistalled and reinstalled a number of times, cleared chache even more times but nothing helps.
