How long does it typically take for deployment of a new VPN connection to an existing virtual network gateway and will existing VPN connections be interrupted during deployment?

We have an existing VPN connection between our Azure environment and our HQ. We want to add another VPN connection using a new local network gateway to the existing virtual network gateway. The existing VPN connection cannot be interrupted for more than a few seconds without impacting customers. Will adding this new VPN connection interrupt the existing connection at all, and if so, for how long?

    Hi Jim Moore,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & hope you are doing well.

Deploying a new VPN connection to an existing virtual network gateway typically takes around 10 minutes or more, depending on the gateway SKU you selected
As for existing VPN connections, they should not be interrupted during the deployment of a new VPN connection

Note: We need to take a few essential steps to add the new VPN connection.
You may already have a virtual network in place with an existing Site-to-Site VPN connection or ExpressRoute connection. If the gateway subnet prefix is /28 or longer (/29, /30, etc.), you have to delete the existing gateway.
If you delete and recreate your gateway, you have downtime for your cross-premises connections.

    Refer this link:https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/expressroute/how-to-configure-coexisting-gateway-portal?form=MG0AV3#to-configure-coexisting-connections-for-an-already-existing-vnet

Kindly let us know if the above helps or you need further assistance on this issue.

    Thanks,

    Rohith.
