A service we will be starting to use shortly requires a printer server with IPP/IPPS enabled on it to print securely. I have setup a Windows Server 2025 server with the printer server and Internet Printing enabled. After adding a network printer to the print server I can do a test print, but when I try to attached my PC on the network to use the w2k25 print server's printer the test print goes to the queue and just says ERROR. Can't find anything to tell me why it is failing. No logs, no useful info in the event viewer.
Only thing I noticed is the setup for IPP printed says you have to download the printers certificate and place in Third Party Root Certificates. However it get auto-deleted by the OS. I tried placing the certificate in the Root and Personal folders, no help. Don't even know the certificate the problem.
If anyone has setup a Windows Print Server with IPP printing, can you give me some help in identifying why nothing from any device other than the print server errors out.
test laptop (win10) - deleted all printers from device and left default printer queues (i.e. print to pdf).
re-added the w2k25 print server printer. http://oprt/printers/brg003/.ptinter then tried a test print and get error. event log says successful sent to print server. Print server not saying much.

Great that you got the job to the server using IPP.
Your user name came through so Windows is getting the correct user name over IPP.
At this point, it just getting spool file on the server to go to the printer, correct?
Error - Printing is a writeport failure to the hardware. I am guessing you have a Standard TCP/IP Port to the printer hardware, correct?
If you are using some other port, can you provide those details?

yes at this point it looks like I can get to the server but then errors out. So not getting to the printer.
yes printer standard TCP/IP port on printer. I made sure the print queue security allows me to use it. I even added EVERYONE to print, but still not printing.
could it be the way I created the queue?
I'd start by using a Type 3 print driver which is not based on the XPS rendering path. We updated Server 2012 to support XPS drivers through the Internet Print server but try a Type 3 driver on the server and the client first. A test page from server to printer does work, correct?
I changed the driver and it looks like it worked. I requested the person that needs this to do a print from the ERP to verify it is working.
Super. Thanks for the update. In general, when you are not using Windows Point and Print, stick with Type 3 drivers. Especially important with a 25 year old feature. Type 4 came out in at the end of 2012. So that's a 12 year old feature
the last try didn't work. I'm trying to get setup so I can test print on the new ERP as was 8 hours after I requested the migration tech to send a test print.
i'm trying to get setup on the test side to be able to send test print myself to monitor in real time. still waiting. hopefully in next few days I can try again and see if this is resolved.
Let's get you started with the connection to the server over IPP first.
On a Windows 11 client, open Settings / Printers & scanners. Click Add Device and after a couple seconds you will see a new link called "Add a new device manually"
You can skip all this crap by opening an elevated command prompt and executing printui /il
You will see the Add Printer UI
Click "Select a shared printer by name"
Enter the http connection string. My server is called ALAN-2022, the printer share is named IPPPRINTER.
The connection string is http://alan-2022/printers/IPPPRINTER/.printer
You will be prompted for drivers so use the same one you have on the server. When both machines are domain joined, you might just get the driver from the server.
I grabbed the "HP LaserJet Flow MFP M527 PCL 6" from Windows Update.
You can also get the connection string by opening a browser and going to http://printservername/printers
In 2000 this UI was first rate. No one has touched this in 25 years.
On Windows 11, the printer should look like this.
I paused the printer on the server and sent the Test Page.

Did you review PrintService logs on the client system? The Admin logs are there. Operational are not enabled by default so turn those on. Thanks
I've looked at the event logs (print server) on both the server and the laptop I'm using to test and no useful information. When I get back from Holidays will see if I can capture them and post.

The client logs just showed it sent to print request. My guess is a authentication or permission problem but haven't found a clue as to what or where.
I'll get you set. I work for PaperCut software now. Previously I tested the print system on Windows NT 3.51 through Server 2012R2.
we use papercut for our normal printing. the IPP/IPPS printing is for our new ERP and secure printing like checks. So separate from our other print servers.
the new w2k25 print server will only do the IPPS printing. I currently have only one printer that's like 20 feet from me for testing. Not the final check printer. I was hoping that would make things easier. The test printer is an HP m527 printer. If I go to the print queue on the w2k25 print server and do a test print it work. but when I try to print from my PC error.
I have yet to find any useful event/log information. SO maybe looking in wrong place.
Been wondering if w2k25 version of IPP printing different some how and I need to do something different. I have a few w2k25 server now and have noticed some things are just a little different from w2k19 or w2k22 servers.
Any suggestions or ideas will be helpful
The focus from Microsoft will be to use Windows Protected Print mode for IPP printing. Is the check printer unique or an off the shelf new ink or laser jet? Basically is it Mopria compliant?

Hi @John Adamski Windows Internet Print server feature was added in Windows 2000. Just FYI. Can you reference the instructions you reference? Is Windows Protected Print mode supported on this version of Windows? The certificate referenced should be installed on the client system if you need to to set up the connection to the share over IPPS. IPP connections are supported starting in Windows 2000 to this day. If the requirement is to send the job from the server to the printer, that will be a different set of steps. Thanks
