I am trying to join a domain in my other subscription and also a different subnet than my VM sits in.

I can ping bidirectionally, and I have the target DC set as my client VM's DNS server. I am able to successfully resolve DNS both internal and external on my client, but when I try to join the .local domain, I get a message that 'The network path was not found' and the Event Lot shows ID 4097, The machine attempted to join the domain xxx.local but failed. The error code was 53'

I am being prompted for a password after attempting to join the domain, so I believe it is networked properly.

There is a Microsoft document to troubleshoot domain join failures:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-ie/troubleshoot/windows-server/identity/troubleshoot-errors-join-computer-to-domain

    Hope this helps.

You can try following troubleshooting steps :

    1. Check NIC binding order and the interface with default gateway should on top.
2.Try disabling NetBIOS in interface properties.
3.Check your client and make sure the DNS server on the clients NIC settings are pointing at a DC's DNS server.
      4.Disable antivirus firewall
