I deleted my Azure MFA method, can't access my Azure portal. Can I delete my subscription?

Hi,

I have a personal Azure subscription that I can no longer access. I reinstalled MS Authenticator on my phone and had no backup to recover from. After I enter my MS user id/password, Azure insists on an Authenticator code, no other options are available. As it is a personal subscription I have no support tier, but my bank details are active and cannot control any resources I may be billed for.

Question: is there a Microsoft billing/subscriptions email I can contact to request my subscription be deleted?

I cannot:

  • log into Azure
  • get a new QR code for Authenticator
  • change or add other authentication methods

I have tried:

  • all the support pages (they all end with me trying to log into Azure)
  • messaged Azure support on X (they gave me a link to support pages)
  • online chat with MS support (they gave me a link to support phone numbers)
  • rang support as a 'home user' (it gave me a link to support pages)
  • rang support as a 'business user' (it asked for company domain, which I don't have)

I wish to either delete (easiest option) or recover access to my Azure subscription. As my billing details are in the subscription I cannot just leave it existing forever.

Many thanks.

    Hi Mart F,

Apologize for any inconvenience caused on this.

You have been locked out of your Azure account because your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method was deleted. This means you cannot log in, access your subscription, or manage your billing. Here are a few steps you can follow to resolve this:

You mentioned that are already tried various support channels, so I recommend reaching out to Microsoft Account Recovery Support specifically for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) resets, follow this link:
Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn

If you prefer to delete your subscription in the Azure portal, go to the Azure Cost Management + Billing page, In the left menu, select "Subscriptions" and choose the subscription you want to delete, navigate to the top of the subscription page, select Cancel and select the reason for cancellation and, if applicable, turn off auto-renew for any support plans. If there are running resources, turn them off. Then select Cancel subscription to finalize.

After cancelling your subscription, Azure will close your current billing cycle within 72 hours, and you will receive your final invoice, and your data will be preserved temporarily in case you decide to reactivate your subscription.

Kindly follow below detailed documentation links for the process:
Cancel and delete your Azure subscription - Microsoft Cost Management | Microsoft Learn
