Native RDP and the Remote Desktop Connection App do not work after KB5046633

I have 100 desktops, 25 of which are brand new Dell Precision 5680 with 128 GB of RAM. After applying the November 12, 2024—KB5046633 (OS Builds 22621.4460 and 22631.4460) update to the new ones, both Native RDP and Microsoft Remote Desktop Application have become extremely slow and freeze up randomly. After working with Dell support, I was advised to contact Microsoft for further assistance.

Here are the details of the issue:

  • The problem occurs on devices with the KB5046633 update installed.
  • I can recreate the issue on a reset device with no additional software installed.
  • The issue occurs when I am at the office, so there are no VPN or bandwidth variations.
  • Remote access to devices without the KB5046633 update does not exhibit the issue.
  • Google Remote Desktop does not have this problem.
  • Reverting the update causes the device to stop working altogether, and it is not possible to install older KBs on new devices.

This appears to be a bug introduced in the recent RDP updates, possibly starting around November 2024 or earlier. Could you please provide guidance on how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue?

    Hello,

According to this thread: RDP session is stuck when making a Disconnect from MacOS Windows App - Microsoft Community. You may try enabling the following policy to see if it resolves the issue:

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Session Environment > Enforce Removal of Remote Desktop Wallpaper

Set this policy to "Enabled" and then check if it works in your situation.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best regards,

    Karlie Weng

No more suggestions? We paid almost $500 for Microsoft Support but their engineers are in India and we are in the US so it is not moving at all. Any other suggestions out there? It would be hard to believe we are the only ones experiencing the freeze and performance degradation in RDP after that update.
