Server Hardening W2008, W2012

Hi All,

I have been asked to get involved in a server hardening project on windows 2008 servers.

The issue we have is that the Applications installed on these servers are not compatible with any newer versions. Basically, it is a legacy App and there is not going to be any update to make it compatible with newer versions anytime soon. So we have to ensure the servers are as hardened as possible.

My first question is - do Microsoft have a Server Hardening plan for W2008 and/or W2012 versions. If so does anyone know where I can get this information from. Also some of the servers in question are workstation servers and so not joined to the domain.

Once I have established the extent of our Server Hardening upgrade is it possible to create a template from the GPO and distribute to the workstation servers?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello czql5v,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

As we know, Microsoft has ended the support for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in 2020.

And Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will end on October 10, 2023

So maybe Microsoft will not have a Server Hardening plan for W2008 and/or W2012 versions.

I suggest you can consider from other aspects, such as Firewalls, intrusion detection, vulnerability scanning systems, installing antivirus software, and much more on W2008 and/or W2012 versions.

And you had better make legacy App compatible with newer versions anytime in future (not in the near future.).

I hope the information above is helpful.
