    Hi Siddhant,

From what I know is that RDS CAL 2019 license remains valid for the supported lifecycle of Windows Server 2019. After that, you can continue using it, but it will not receive updates or technical support from Microsoft.

So let's say you upgrade to windows server 2022 then you'll need new licenses for OS 2022

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-client-access-license

    Key points:

    1. Perpetual License: Once purchased, the RDS CAL is perpetual, meaning it doesn’t expire. You can continue to use it indefinitely, provided you are still using the version of Windows Server for which the CAL was purchased.
    2. Lifecycle of Server OS: The RDS CAL is valid as long as the associated version of Windows Server (e.g., Windows Server 2019) is supported by Microsoft. Support for each version of Windows Server typically lasts around 10 years (5 years mainstream support + 5 years extended support).
    3. No Automatic Upgrade: An RDS CAL 2019 will only be valid for Windows Server 2019 or earlier. It will not automatically cover access to newer versions of Windows Server (e.g., Windows Server 2022). For newer server versions, you'll need to buy new CALs.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community forum.

RDS CAL (including User CAL and Device CAL) is usually purchased once and can be used permanently after purchase, and does not require regular renewal. As long as you don't change the server operating system or hardware environment, CAL will usually continue to work. Please note that some related service and support contracts may be subject to periodic renewal. For example, service contracts such as Software Assurance may need to be renewed to maintain ongoing software updates and technical support. If you have specific purchase needs or more questions, it is recommended to consult your vendor directly to get the latest information.

It is worth noting that the grace period and renewal period of the two RDS CAL are different. They are primarily handled automatically by the license server without manual intervention by the administrator.

I hope this helps. If you have any follow-up questions, please contact us.

    Best regards

    Jacen
