Hi Siddhant,
From what I know is that RDS CAL 2019 license remains valid for the supported lifecycle of Windows Server 2019. After that, you can continue using it, but it will not receive updates or technical support from Microsoft.
So let's say you upgrade to windows server 2022 then you'll need new licenses for OS 2022
Key points:
- Perpetual License: Once purchased, the RDS CAL is perpetual, meaning it doesn’t expire. You can continue to use it indefinitely, provided you are still using the version of Windows Server for which the CAL was purchased.
- Lifecycle of Server OS: The RDS CAL is valid as long as the associated version of Windows Server (e.g., Windows Server 2019) is supported by Microsoft. Support for each version of Windows Server typically lasts around 10 years (5 years mainstream support + 5 years extended support).
- No Automatic Upgrade: An RDS CAL 2019 will only be valid for Windows Server 2019 or earlier. It will not automatically cover access to newer versions of Windows Server (e.g., Windows Server 2022). For newer server versions, you'll need to buy new CALs.
