Windows Updates failing error code 0x80070003

Hello,

For the past few months this instance of Windows Server 2016 keeps failing when installing the cumulative updates, most recently updates: 2024-02 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB5034767), received error code 0x80070003 and 2024-02 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 4.8 for Windows Server 2016 for x64 (KB5034614), also with error code 0x80070003.

CBS.log file does show this, but I'm not sure if it's related. "Could not load SrClient DLL from path: SrClient.dll. Continuing without system restore points."

sfc /scannow shows no integrity violations.

We have tried:

net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old ren c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log WindowsUpdate.old net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:D:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

Rebooted several times. Still getting the same error.

    Molly,

This is the result I get when running Windows Troubleshooter.

    Hello,

If there is still corruption canoot be fixed, consider performing an in-place upgrade of Windows. This process reinstalls Windows while preserving your files and applications. You’ll need a Windows installation media for this.

I had a similar experience. I followed the instructions as above but still the windows update won't complete.Isn't your suggestion immediately above to servers, not lap tops or pcs?

    Hello,
I have the same issue with a 2016 server; it won’t install Cumulative Updates. Manual installation of Cumulative Update package also failed. Interestingly, it installed other updates without any problems. The typical suggestions mentioned here, of course, don't work. Has anyone managed to resolve this?

Having same issue on server 2016, server 2019 and Windows 10, randomly on these devices. Only the cumulative updates will not install, the other updates install. MS keeps recommended run in place upgrade to repair the machines. This is not a good answer when it is multiple machines in an environment.
