PC freezes when accessing mapped one drive

  • Running Windows 10 PRO.
  • Mapped one drive to a network drive on my PC (e.g., Z)
  • Mapping works.
  • I then go into file explorer and click on the Z drive and go into one of the subfolders. When I click on a DOC or PDF to open it, the computer freezes up and have to power off computer.
  • I have tried un-mapping and re-mapping, rebooting multiple times and get same result.
  • This has been working fine for several weeks and problem only started yesterday.
  • Have plenty of storage available, so it's not a storage issue
  • Would be grateful for suggestions.

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

According to your description, this issue could be caused by network issues, software conflicts, or corrupted files, etc. Here are some steps you can try:

Make sure you have a stable internet connection. Try accessing the same file from other devices on the same network to troubleshoot network issues.

Copy the problematic file from the network drive to your local storage and try to open it. If the file opens normally, the problem may be related to the network or network drive.

Make sure your network adapter drivers are up to date. You can update them through Device Manager, or visit the manufacturer's website.

Disable any antivirus software or firewalls temporarily and see if they are causing the problem. Sometimes security software interferes with access to files on the network.

If only specific files are causing the freeze, they may be corrupted. Try accessing different files and see if the problem persists.

If you have administrative privileges for network drives, run a disk check to find and fix errors on the drives.

Open the Event Viewer to view error messages related to a network drive or file system. This can provide more information about the cause of the problem.

Start your PC in safe mode with a network connection, and then try to access the network drive. If the issue doesn't appear in Safe Mode, it may be caused by a third-party application or driver.

Make sure you have the correct permissions to access the network drive and its files.

Try clearing cached credentials, sometimes cached credentials cause problems. You can clear them via Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Credential Manager.

Make sure your Windows 10 is up to date. Sometimes, an update can fix an underlying issue with the system.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Regards,

    Jill Zhou
