Remote Desktop Services User Profile folder not being created at first login

We have seen this issue for some time now and finally everyone is on the same page to get to the bottom of the issue and get it fixed. We recently completed the following migration:

Active Directory servers: Server OS from 2012R2 to Server 2019

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops: Desktop image from 2012R2 to Server 2016

We use the "Remote Desktop Services User Profile" field in the User properties for all of our Citrix users. When a new user is created, the profile path is entered as: \server\share<username>, at login to Citrix they get a temporary profile and a Windows message that their account couldn't be created and to sign out and sign back in as that is the most common fix. They should have a \server\share<username>.V6 folder, but that isn't created automatically. The sign out, sign in process doesn't work. I believe this to be a combination of wrong/missing permissions on the parent share and missing registry/GPO settings on the Citrix image.

The parent share (\server\share) is as follows:

Security Tab:

  • SYSTEM (Full)
  • Domain Admins (Full)
  • Administrators (Full)

Share tab:

  • Authenticated Users (Full)

I believe that we need the CREATOR/OWNER permission set on the parent share, either Full or Modify(preferred). In addition, I think we need a registry entry for the 2016-based Citrix image that will revert changes made to RCM in the jump to Server 2016/2019 from 2012R2. Has anyone experienced this issue and know how to solve it?

Are Group Policy Objects (GPOs) in place to configure user profile creation settings?

Is the \server\share<username> path correctly specified in the "Remote Desktop Services User Profile" field for each user?
