Hello,

I'm working on a network and I noticed that two of the domain controllers don't ADWS in services, however, one of the servers has it. How can I add this to my other Windows 2008 SP2 AD controllers?

Thanks,

    Hello Rob Fink,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

If we add ADDS role on one server and promote this server as one Domain Controller, there should be Active Directory Web Service.

If two of the domain controllers don't ADWS in services work fine? If so, why you need this ADWS service in services?

If you must need this service, you can back up one of the domain controllers don't ADWS in services, and uninstall the ADDS role and reinstall ADDS role, after that check if you have ADWS service.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
    Daisy Zhou

    Daisy,

From what I read this is the case as long as the servers are 2008 r2 or greater, 2008 and below did not come with ADWS but one of these 2008 sp2 DC's has the ADWS on it, so Im unsure how. Unfortunate due to a time event two of the DC tombstoned and one of them was the one with ADWS. I was looking for a way to get ADWS on the remaining DC.

Now I'm trying to find the best way forward.

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Hello Rob Fink,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, we can see information below from the link below:

ADWS is installed automatically when you add the AD DS or AD LDS server roles to your Windows Server 2008 R2 server. ADWS is configured to run if you make this Windows Server 2008 R2 server a domain controller by running Dcpromo.exe or if you create an AD LDS instance on this Windows Server 2008 R2 server.

What's New in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) in Windows Server 2008 R2: Active Directory Web Services | Microsoft Learn

Why you want to add ADWS server on 2008 DC?

Because 2008 server or DC is out of support, we suggest you can upgrade 2008 DC to higher version (such as 2016, 2019 or 2022).

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
    Daisy Zhou
