Support should be able to pinpoint the domain/provide you details, but I would also suggest trying the "domain takeover" procedure: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/enterprise-users/domains-admin-takeover
How can we add our custom domain to our new tenant?
We had a previous tenant that is no longer active and doesn't seem to be accessible in any way. Now we are trying to set up our custom domain on the new tenant but keep running into an issue. We keep getting an error when trying to add our custom domain on both the Microsoft 365 admin portal and the Azure AD domain settings.
In Azure AD, it says that it is unable to verify the domain name despite our the TXT being accurate and available via nslookup/dig.
In Microsoft 365 admin it returns this error message:
Your domain cannot be added or verified at this time because other people in your organization have signed up with ****** email addresses and the domain has been added to another Microsoft 365 tenant. To continue adding your domain to this tenant you will need to remove it first and add it back again.
When we reach out to support, they have told us that the previous tenant isn't active and that the domain isn't showing it's attached to any existing tenant. We have an existing support ticket out but we haven't heard anything (#23524722).
Any ideas what we can do to get the domain released and added to our new tenant or how to fix this weird issue? Thanks.

2021-01-11T19:57:37.6+00:00 @mirba-msft - Do we have any updates on this issue? We are dead in the water at a stand still until this is fixed. A lot of money and time has been spent and devoted to this with many internal and external resources waiting on the release of the domain. We are losing money by the day.
