I just posted this question as my team was thinking that it was lower than they anticipated per our design and wanted to confirm if the documentation is not upto date. We were thinking that it will support about 4000 (as the priority order of NSG rules goes from 100 to 4096).
No. There are "only" 1000 NSG Rules per NSG.
Every "network communication" has to pass the rules of a NSG. Even with 1000 rules in a NSG it is some kind of workload to process these.
Do you see any limitations for you by the limit of 1000 rules per NSG?

@Andreas Baumgarten - I believe so. I am not very technical here. I am a tech PM working with engineers. There are concerns with 1000 rules limit.

Hi There @Andreas Baumgarten I have see the priority numbers can take from 100 to 4096, however the limit is only 1000 Rules/NSG. So That implies we have about 4x Priority number than we can utilize, is my understanding correct?

Yes, you have about 4x priority numbers that you can utilize for the 1000 rules/NSG. The range of the priority number is higher than the limit of rules to give users the flexibility to use numbers with an even gap such as 100, 200, 300... etc. because 100, 101, 102 and so on would be much clumsier and difficult to manage. This eliminates the necessity of keeping a count of actual priority numbers and go through all your available rules to find an available priority number.
