Turn off passwordless sign in - Microsoft authenticator app

Dear all,

Does anyone know how to TURN OFF passwordless sign in on the Microsoft authenticator app?

The instructions are less than helpful.

(1) The first instruction is to turn it off through the authenticator app. There is no function within the app that allows for this. I have no idea why they state it is possible.

(2) The second instructions states to sign into the Azure portal - azure active directory - security - authentication methods. I have tried this for the past three weeks. The Azure portal - security button cannot be selected.

There has to be a logical reason they have made it impossible to turn off.

Ever get this answered. I'm trying to do the same.

Currently my consumer outlook.com is setup for passwordless but I need to test passwordless for an Azure AD account. The limit of ONE make me need to find a way to turn this off for my consumer account.

1) Within the app, you can click on the small arrow on the right top corner of your credential entry, select "Disable phone sign-in"

2) The Azure AD portal blade can be accessed directly here: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_AAD_IAM/AuthenticationMethodsMenuBlade/AdminAuthMethods
Do note that you need to have permissions to access it, so if you are trying to do so as end user it will not work.

Hi Michev,

I can assure you there is nothing in the app to allow for this.

I had read that also, but there is nothing in the app to select disable phone sign in.

Is there an error in the app?

You can go to the app's "Settings -> Device Registration" section and unregister your device. Once you do this, you will need to re-authenticate to your MS apps (Outlook, Teams, ...), but you should not get Passwordless again.

Yeah, being AppleWatch user, this is a pain...

Here are 2 ways to disable the passwordless sign in option.

1) App method :
Choose the account for which you want to remove the password less sign in feature.

Select disable phone sign in. Go through the process to remove it.

2) From azure portal, an admin or someone with authentication policy administrator account can perform this. Select push as configure method.

We do not have Disable phone sign in option on our account menu. Kindly suggest fix.

Yeah, this doesn’t work. iPhone doesn’t have the same options and I can logon to an Azure account but it does not have the same options. I’m locked out of a crypto mining account because Microsoft decided to change the settings (they changed on their own, I used to get 6 digit codes no problem). I’ve tried every option and clearly the answer would be to have password less sign in disabled but every time I follow somebody’s instructions it doesn’t work.

Same Here, I don´t have that option, and I really require to use a 6 digit code instead of 8 digit code... Its so weird that you cant disable passwordless because your phone is acting like a password, even if you disable it on the web, I have tried everything, exept removing biometrics from my phone, since that will block other apps that already linked to that...

Hope Microsoft fixes this soon.

My phone shows that passwordless is off and two-step verification is off but it still only gives me 8 digits. How has this been an issue for over a year and microsoft still hasn't fixed this for iphone users??
