Transactional Replication in AlwaysOn - Update SQL from 2019 to 2022 for a distributor

2025-03-17T16:11:27.1333333+00:00

Hello.

Question about the correct order of updating MS SQL Server

which acts as a distributor for transactional replication.

The scheme looks like this, there is an availability group

AlwaysOn which consists of two nodes, for some databases

in AlwaysOn transactional replication with an external

distributor is configured.

On the nodes of the availability group and on the distributor,

versions of MS SQL Server 2019 CU 30 are installed.

There is a need to update all three instances to version MS SQL Server 2022 CU 17.

The question is how to do this correctly, in what sequence to update the nodes?

    Hi there Мандзя Богдан Миколайович

    Thanks for using QandA platform

start by upgrading the Distributor first, pausing replication, and verifying that agents run smoothly. Next, upgrade one secondary replica, remove it from the AG, update to SQL Server 2022, and rejoin it. Then, failover to the upgraded secondary, update the primary replica, and rejoin it to the AG. Finally, validate replication and AG health, ensuring synchronization and agent functionality before resuming full operations.

If this helps kindly accept the answer thanks much.
