Hello everyone,

I need some clarification regarding SQL Server licenses. I am currently using SQL Server Developer for development and testing. I was told that I can only use this version once for system testing, otherwise, I need to switch to the normal version.

Could you please explain in detail what is allowed with each version according to Microsoft's official information? Additionally, how can I contact a Microsoft licensing specialist for free advice?

Thank you in advance for your help!

you are correct SQL Server Developer can only be used for development and testing. It can not be used for "production" or processing "production" data. sql server has editions, once you pick an edition you then pick a licensing model, either CALS (per user) or Server Core. Access by internet users (say your app is a website) is an additional license.

your sales rep should be able to give you licensing and contact info.

    Hi @MAHANDI Naziha (external),

Microsoft has an official document that spells out where and under what circumstances SQL Server 2019 Developer edition could be installed and used.

It is any environment except a production:

    • Development

    • Test

    • User Acceptance Testing (UAT)

For the installed SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition, you can find its EULA with all details under:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\150\License Terms\SQLServer2019_License_DEV_1033.rtf

(for other versions the folder is slightly different)

Here is a relevant excerpt from the official Microsoft document:

    SQL Server License 2025-03-19 155837

In addition to the other answers - that I am in no way disagrees with - you can call (1-800-426-9400), Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST to speak directly to Microsoft licensing specialist.
