Hi, I have a new Microsoft surface 4 laptop, is it okay to keep it plugged in with charging adapter when using laptop at all times or for longer period, even when battery is 100% charged? And remove it from charging when laptop has shutdown?

I personally know someone who had kept their laptop plugged during nights when laptop was off and plugged in when on or using and now its battery finishes so quickly after charge.

My surface 4 laptop has battery smart charging turned on and it says if plugged in it restricts charging till 80% when plugged in for long time but mine still charges till 100%

Point is should I remove the charging adapter and use laptop on battery more often when it reaches 100%? Or keep it plugged in? I have seen during charging the laptop does heat up.

Yes - you can rely on Smart Charging functionality to automatically adjust charging patterns. As per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/caring-for-your-surface-battery-9ccdfa7b-d074-f629-425c-1c090ac66bed ,

Battery Smart Charging – Battery Smart Charging is a feature that helps protect your battery from the effects of charging patterns and high temperatures that may accelerate battery aging or lead to expansion. Battery Smart Charging is always active and turns on automatically to limit battery charging to 80% when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods and/or used at elevated temperatures. The 80% charging limit automatically turns off when the battery has been discharged below 20%.

Smart charging is always active and turns on automatically when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures.
