Hi User Test,
Appreciate your query over the Microsoft Q&A platform.
Yes, you can move a Microsoft 365 license from one account (let’s say Account 1) to another (Account 2) without having to delete Account 1. And if you ever want to give the license back to Account 1 later, all the previous data and history will still be there — as long as it’s within the allowed timeframe.
When you remove the license from Account 1:
The account itself stays active, just not licensed.
All the user’s data — emails, OneDrive files, Teams messages, etc. — stays safe for a while (usually 30 to 60 days, depending on settings and location).
The user won’t be able to access premium features during that time, but nothing gets deleted right away.
After that grace period, the data might get deleted unless you've set up data retention policies (common in enterprise plans).
When you reassign the license to Account 1:
- The user gets full access again.
- All their emails, files, and chats will come back — as long as it's still within that retention period.
- They can pick up right where they left off.
