Linking Excel files to PowerPoint makes the actual excel file disappear from the folder

We have tried linking an excel file in PowerPoint using both methods of copy pasting and placing an object and in both methods the actual Excel file disappeared from the folder and we cannot find it anywhere. Can someone explain the reason and how to retrieve the excel file?
